Pondy's Top Tips - Coming into winter with Koi
Share
Pondy is a well known Koi and Aquatic expert. Here are his best tips with promoting overall health and care for your Koi over the winter months.
- Now autumn is here - Try switching your food to wheatgerm once the temperature drops and throughout winter to help slow the metabolism.
- Some Koi keepers even stop feeding altogether once the temperature drops below 8`C. However, if you want to continue feeding, reduce drastically only during the day if the Koi are actively looking for food.
- Bypass Bakki Showers or cover them with water jackets to stop cold air from entering the pond.
- Break any ice forming over the entirety of the pond so gasses can escape. (This shouldn't happen if you have good flow on the pond)
- Salt bath any Koi if needed. You can use 3 ounces of salt per gallon of pond water.
- Garlic is your friend. You can purchase Garlic granules and create small pellets with warm water to feed them throughout winter.
